Mass gainer or whey protein? Choosing by your goal
They sit side by side and look alike, but they are built for different people. Buying a gainer when you do not need the calories is the most common mistake.
Mass gainer or whey protein? Choosing by your goal
Mass gainers and whey protein sit next to each other on the shelf and look alike, but they are built for different people. WHAT A MASS GAINER IS A gainer is mostly carbohydrate with protein added, and some fat. One serving can carry several hundred calories — the label tells you exactly how many. It exists for one job: helping people who struggle to eat enough to put on weight. WHAT WHEY IS Whey protein is mostly protein, with relatively few calories per scoop. It adds protein to your day without adding much else. WHICH ONE IS FOR YOU? Choose a gainer if you are naturally thin, have a small appetite, and find it genuinely hard to eat enough — the classic "hard gainer". Choose whey if you already eat enough food and want more protein, or you are trying to stay lean or lose fat. The common mistake is buying a gainer when you do not need the extra calories. A gainer on top of a full diet mostly adds fat. USING A GAINER SENSIBLY • Start with a smaller serving than the label's full dose, and see how your stomach handles it. • Use it as well as meals, not instead of them. • Train. The calories are meant to fuel growth from lifting, not replace it. A HALF-WAY OPTION Some people make their own: a scoop of whey blended with milk, a banana, and some peanut butter or oats. You control exactly what goes in. Ask us which gainers are in stock — we carry brands including MuscleTech and Muscle Gears, alongside a wide range of whey. Tell us your weight, your appetite and your training, and we will help you choose. If you have diabetes or any other medical condition, speak to your doctor before using a high-calorie supplement.
